NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—Andrew Carey of New Providence is now entering his third week as Acting Middlesex County Prosecutor, but not much is known about the new appointee.

Jim O'Neill, longtime spokesman for the prosecutor's office confirmed that his new boss has not yet re-located to Middlesex County.  O'Neill said Carey's move is still in the works, but declined to say which municipality the prosecutor intends to move to.

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—The City Council's five members are poised to adopt an ordinance that would to ban smoking in all city parks and other city property.

A final vote scheduled for tomorrow will be preceeded by a public hearing where the council will hear questions and comments on the ordinance from anyone.

The hearing will take place at the council's regular meeting, held on the top floor of City Hall at 6:30pm.

Council President Rebecca Escobar, herself a smoker, has said publicly that she supports the law.

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—The Home News Tribune (HNT) reported that longtime County Prosecutor Bruce Kaplan has resigned from office to take a position in the state Attorney General's office.

"MCP Bruce Kaplan resigned today to take a job as counsel to Division of Justice in AG Office. Sen. Bob Smith rumored to have hooked him up," tweeted HNT reporter Bob Makin early Saturday morning.

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—The eleventh annual protest and campout on the main lawn at Rutgers campus, known as Tent State University, came to an end two weeks ago today, following a week of educational, political, and cultural activities.

The Tent State occupation protests predate Occupy Wall Street, having started in April 2003. The protests began in response to funding cuts to Rutgers and other higher education institutions.

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—Multiple sources have confirmed that former Middlesex County Prosecutor Bruce Kaplan has resigned from office, following a difficult week that saw an onslought of criticism on the eleven-year veteran.

As we reported last month, Gov. Chris Christie announced his intention to replace Kaplan as the county's top law enforcement official with Andrew Carey, a former colleague of the governors' in the US Attorney's office.

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—Edward Spencer, a longtime city employee and political figure, was chosen by his fellow board of education members to serve as the board president for the second consecutive year.

The board unanimously voted to keep Spencer in the leadership role, and Pat Sadowski as Vice President, at their annual re-organization meeting Tuesday night at New Brunswick High School.

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) is in the process of conducting repair work on the Route 18 bridge over Route 1 in New Brunswick, as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

The New Brunswick Police Department (NBPD) issued a traffic advisory warning for residents to "expect heavy congestion and traffic delays" every night this week, Monday through Friday.

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—Yesterday, a county judge decided to postpone the sentencing of two former New Brunswick Parking Authority (NBPA) employees convicted in January of official misconduct for failing to report thefts by their fellow employees.

The two men convicted are Emil Hanna, who worked for the authority since 2001 and made $30,304 annually, and Emad Naguib, who worked for the authority since 2003 and made $26,872.

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—To assist with rebuilding from the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, New Brunswick's Congressional representative Frank Pallone Jr. announced on Friday that New Brunswick will be receiving a $1,066,166 grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

The event describes itself as a place "to educate you about your rights and responsibilities as a tenant."

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—John Krenos is one of the incumbents of the Board of Education, and is seeking election to keep his seat on the board for the first time.

Krenos has been a Rutgers faculty member for forty years, and he teaches honors chemistry.  Because a college professor has much say in how his or her classroom, the classes Krenos teaches are a way to gain insight into his views on education.

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—Martin Arocho has been a New Brunswick resident for over 30 years and currently resides in the Dewey section/neighborhood on Dewey St.

Arocho has 5 children that are currently in, or have gone through, the New Brunswick school system.

His time in New Brunswick has seen many years of service as PTO president of Roosevelt and also the little league coach of several baseball and soccer teams - activities of which his children participated in also.

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ--Patricia Sadowski, a 16-year incumbent member of the New Brunswick Board of Education, is seeking re-election today.

A lifelong resident of the Hub City and New Brunswick High School graduate, Sadowski addressed her concerns and hopes for all New Brunswick public schools in last Thursday's debate.

Her goal, if reelected, is to finish one of the connstruciton of a new buidling for the Redshaw Elementary School, which was closed in 2006 with the promise of a replacement school.

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—Sean Monahan is running as in today's school board election, . Sean is a Rutgers University alumnus with a degree in Sociology, and is also a New Brunswick resident and homeowner.

Monahan is currently employed as a web developer and has past experience as an EMT and local community organizer.

In his opening statement at the school board candidate's forum last Thursday, Monahan said: "The pathway to a good job in America centers around education."

With the city's first ever school board elections taking place today, candidates had a chance to voice their opinions on how to deal with the gang problem should they be elected.

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—Incumbents Benito Ortiz, Pat Sadowski, and John Krenos were victorious in today's election to keep their seats on the city's elected school board

987 city residents turned out to vote at the city's thirteen polling places today.

Benito Ortiz lead the six candidates with 69% of the votes cast, followed closely by running mates Sadowski and  Krenos, with 65% and 63% respectively.

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—City residents are slowly trickling into polling places this afternoon, but the turnout numbers appear to be on pace to surpass January's total of 766.

Polls will remain open until 9 p.m. this evening in the city's first regular school board election, which pits three incumbents against a coordinated campaign by three residents including a former board member.

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—The issue to televise New Brunswick School Board meetings was brought up during the Board of Education forum Thursday night and candidates told the public their opinion.

Every month the School Board holds a meeting open to the public but the attendance is very low, causing concerns as to whether the residents of New Brunswick are fully informed of the issues going on in their city.

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—Among the hot topics at a candidate forum for today's school board election were the quality of the New Brunswick Public Schools, both in their physical condition and academic rankings.

New Brunswick has a total of seven elementary schools, one middle school, one K-8 community school, and two high schools.  However, the statistics of both schools are combined
