NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—Last weekend, the 14th annual Rutgers Dance Marathon took place, raising a total of $503,641.77. The funds are to be donated to the Embrace Kids Foundation, a group committed to aiding children with cancer and blood disorders.

According to their website, the Rutgers University Dance Marathon has donated over 3.1 million dollars to the Embrace Kids Foundation to date. This makes DM the largest student-run philanthropy event in New Jersey.

NORTH BRUNSWICK, NJ—Andrew Gottfried, a 19-year-old Rutgers University freshman, died in his room at Perry Hall on the Cook campus, according to Rutgers spokesman Steve Manas.

Gottfried's body was discovered shortly after 9am on March 15, the final day of classes before a week-long break in the semester was scheduled to begin.  Paramedics and police who were called to the scene attempted to revive Gottfried unsuccessfully.

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—Four years to the day after a violent shootout in the Sixth Ward, the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office announced that the three men who survived plead guilty to armed robbery and attempted murder.

On March 12, 2009, four men fleeing a bank robbery headed into New Brunswick where city police officers joined in the pursuit.

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—Promise House, a new unique housing development in the Second Ward is welcoming its first residents this month.

The ten-unit residence will provide permanent housing for a particularly at-risk subset of the homeless population, namely those who are physically disabled or mentally ill.

Triple C Housing, a South Brunswick-based non-profit, spearheaded the new construction project on Redmond Street.  Since 1979, Triple C has served the low-income special needs populations in Middlesex and Ocean counties.

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—St. Peter's University Hospital has recently expanded and redesigined their perinatal center. The new modernized facility is now equipped with state-of-the-art equipment, including an Antenatal Testing Unit

St. Peter's now offers a Perinatal Emergency Triage and Treatment Unit, an eight-bed unit serves that will serve as an emergency room for pregnant women, along with a High-Risk Antepartum Unit that will treat women with chornic medical coniditions or complex pregnacies.

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—For the past four years, Johnson & Johnson (J&J) and Rutgers University have teamed up to provide the New Brunswick community with a local farmer's market located at Jones Avenue and Georges Road.

The New Brunswick Community Farmer's Market, a seasonal operation based near the Cook campus of Rutgers, regularly open on Thursdays and Saturdays from 11am-3pm.  This past Saturday, they stayed open until 5pm.

NEW YORK, NY—Zhiping Pang, a researcher at the Child Health Institute in New Brunswick was awarded the 2012 Freedman Prize by the The Brain and Behavior Research Foundation at a ceremony on July 27.

The prestigious award was given for Dr. Pang's success in developing a new way of studying synaptic dysfunction of brain and behavior disorders, including schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.

The Century for the Cure bicycling benefit was started by Scott Glickman a Warren Township resident in 2005. The benefit is seven years and still going strong raising up to $825,000 to finding a cure for cancer.

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—The Cancer Institute of New Jersey (CINJ) is calling for volunteers and bicycling enthusiasts to cycle for their 8th Annual "Century for the Cure" ride.

The city-based CINJ holds this event with one goal in mind: to find a cure for cancer.  Registration is now open for this year's September 8 ride.

The race will start at at Camp Riverbend in Warren Township and offer a variety of courses trailing through the scenic back roads of central New Jersey.

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—The Robert Wood Johnson Health Network might be getting even bigger soon, as executives have been in talks with Somerset Medical Center in Somerville to define a parternship.

The Robert Wood Johnson network includes hospitals with the RWJ name in New Brunswick, Rahway, and Hamilton, as well as the Raritan Bay Medical Centers in Old Bridge and Perth Amboy.  The system also includes a variety of other facilities in Middlesex, Monmouth, Somerset, Union, and Mercer counties.

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—Johnson & Johnson announced last Monday that they are seeking approval of the Food & Drug Administration to sell bedaquiline, an expermiental drug that combats tuberculosis (TB).

Bedaquiline is the first drug specifically made to fight tuberculosis in over four decades. It was desinged to combat multidrug-resistant tuberculosis, according to a report on MyCentralJersey.com.

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—Kids from all over New Jersey came to New Brunswick to compete in the annual Soap Box Derby, held on Johnson Drive adjacent to Johnson & Johnson's worldwide headquarters.

In addition to the soap box races, visitors also enjoyed a car show held in the Johnson & Johnson parking lot.

This year's winners include Jeffrey Clouser, Julianne Miller, and Alex Hawkins.  They each move onto the national championships in Akron, Ohio.

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—The Rutgers Cell and DNA Repository (RUCDR) has received $2.4 million from the US Army STARRS (Study to Assess Risk and Resilience in Service Members) to conduct a study on the genetic make-up of soldiers at risk for suicide or psychological issues.

The deal means that Rutgers will have the opportunity to be a part of the largest study of mental health risks ever conducted by the United States military, according to a report in the Home News Tribune.

FDA voted 4-6 against expanding the use of Johnson & Johnson's blood thinner Xarelto. Johnson & Johnson's subsidiary company Janssen Research and Development wanted to expand the use of the drug to treatpatients with acute coronary syndrome.

WASHINGTON, DC—The Food & Drug Administration's advisors voted 6-4 against expanding the use of the Johnson & Johnson's drug Xarelto.

The blood thinner has already been approved in the U.S. to reduce the risk of blood clots in patients who have undergone knee or hip replacement surgery and prevent strokes in people with atrial fibrillation not caused by a heart valve problem, according a report on NJ.com.

Food and dessert vendors sold hot and cold dishes, while live musicians serenaded the crowd on stage.  Nearby, a man offerred himself as a victim in the event's dunk tank.  But by far the longest line was for free face-painting.

St. Peter's Hospital will be moving ahead with a plan to install 10,000 solar panels at both the main campus on Easton Avenue and their clinic on How Lane.  The plan was approved by the city's Planning Board in 2011.

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ - St. Peter’s University Hospital proposed a plan to install 10,000 solar panels on four of their buildings and two large parking lots. The solar panel system will be able to generate 2.3 million kilowatts of electricity, enough energy to power an estimated 230 homes.
