NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—The eleventh annual protest and campout on the main lawn at Rutgers campus, known as Tent State University, came to an end two weeks ago today, following a week of educational, political, and cultural activities.

The Tent State occupation protests predate Occupy Wall Street, having started in April 2003. The protests began in response to funding cuts to Rutgers and other higher education institutions.

Rutgers Day includes exhibits, performances and activities from a variety of University clubs and student organizations.

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—Eddie Jordan was named the next Rutgers men's basketball coach in front of a crowd of nearly 300 people and more than a dozen television camera yesterday afternoon at the College Avenue gym.

"Today is about the future of Rutgers basketball, and we're moving forward," proclaimed Jordan.  "There's some healing process that has to be done."

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—Last Friday, Rutgers University’s Aresty Research Center for Undergraduates held their ninth annual university-wide Undergraduate Research Symposium.

The Symposium was at the Rutgers Student Center on College Avenue, and it featured the work of 450 student researchers from over 60 different departments.

Graduate students and postdoctoral researchers evaluated the presentations.

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—John Krenos is one of the incumbents of the Board of Education, and is seeking election to keep his seat on the board for the first time.

Krenos has been a Rutgers faculty member for forty years, and he teaches honors chemistry.  Because a college professor has much say in how his or her classroom, the classes Krenos teaches are a way to gain insight into his views on education.

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—Chaos erupted on a street in the city's Sixth Ward Saturday afternoon, as a block party thrown by residents devolved into mayhem.  Meanwhile, local police staged a block away, gathering riot gear and seeking manpower from nearby departments.

NewBrunswickToday.com arrived on the scene shortly after 5:00pm, responding to a report of brutality by Rutgers police against a party-goer.

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—Last weekend, the 14th annual Rutgers Dance Marathon took place, raising a total of $503,641.77. The funds are to be donated to the Embrace Kids Foundation, a group committed to aiding children with cancer and blood disorders.

According to their website, the Rutgers University Dance Marathon has donated over 3.1 million dollars to the Embrace Kids Foundation to date. This makes DM the largest student-run philanthropy event in New Jersey.

NEW YORK, NY—Rutgers University's spoken word poetry group, Verbal Mayhem, was invited to the 2013 College Unions Poetry Slam Invitational (CUPSI) at Barnard College in New York earlier this month

Shireen Hamza, Alyea Pierce, Dennis Sholler, and Kate Thomas represented Rutgers-New Brunswick at the national competition.

There was a total of 59 teams invited to CUPSI, and each team performed at least twice in the preliminary bouts.

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—City police teamed up with cops from Rutgers University, North Brunswick, and Franklin Township to respond to a large disturbance in the city's Sixth Ward.

An all-day party dubbed "Delafest" grew throughout the afternoon, as hundreds of residents and visitors filled Delafield Street and packed porches and rooves to capacity.

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—Rutgers director of intercollegiate athletics Timothy Pernetti resigned Friday following an embarrassing scandal involving the misconduct of head basketball coach Mike Rice.

Pernetti played football for Rutgers in the early 1990's, and he made the unusual jump from television executive to college athletics director in 2009 when he was hired to the $410,000 job by then-President Richard McCormick.

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—According to a report commissioned by Rutgers officials, several members of the school's administration knew about the alleged misconduct of head basketball coach Mike Rice months before the scandal unfolded last week.

In May 2010, Athletic Director Tim Pernetti hired Rice as the Rutgers men's basketball coach.  Rice allegedly abused the team's players, calling them names including homophobic slurs and throwing basketballs at their heads and bodies.

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—The Mabel Smith Douglass Library hosted an event Thursday evening that featured spoken word performances by members of Rutgers University's Verbal Mayhem, as well as a student-produced video that featured accounts from lawyers, historians, and prisoners released from Guantánamo Bay.

Attorney Yvonne Bradley said it is unbelievable "how fear and propaganda can make a difference on how people see things."

PISCATAWAY, NJ—Amidst a swarm of negative publicity stemming from a nationally-released video of Rutgers men's basketball coach Mike Rice verbally and physically harassing players during an early-season practice, the university announced Wednesday that it has severed ties with the three-year coach.

Rutgers Athletic Director Tim Pernetti announced Rice's firing a day after ESPN's Outside The Lines aired a video of Rice shoving players, pegging them with basketballs, and yelling homophobic slurs towards the young men.

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—Tomorrow afternoon, Rutgers University's President Robert L. Barchi will be hosting the third of five University Town Hall meetings geared toward developing a strategic plan for the school.

The event is open to the public, and will take place in the Rutgers Student Center Multipurpose Room at 126 College Avenue starting at 3pm.

Members of the public will get the opportunity to questions ask Barchi in between his PowerPoint slides, but only certain questions.

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—The Rutgers School of Communication & Information will be expanding into a new office building with a conference room, to begin construction this summer.

The new 5,190-square-foot building will replace a small surface parking lot on Huntington Street, near the Alexander Library.

It will be three stories tall and gray in color.  A nearby building will be recolored to match the new structure.

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—Benjamin Caturano, a 22-year-old New Brunswick resident, has been arrested, along with three other people. They were charged with participating in a conspiracy to purchase and distribute roughly two kilograms of one of the controlled substances commonly known as “bath salts.”

NORTH BRUNSWICK, NJ—Andrew Gottfried, a 19-year-old Rutgers University freshman, died in his room at Perry Hall on the Cook campus, according to Rutgers spokesman Steve Manas.

Gottfried's body was discovered shortly after 9am on March 15, the final day of classes before a week-long break in the semester was scheduled to begin.  Paramedics and police who were called to the scene attempted to revive Gottfried unsuccessfully.

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—The man who struck and killed Rutgers student Chelsea Traynor with his truck in 2010 has pleaded guilty to a count of death by auto, admitting he was driving recklessly.

A press release from the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office announced that Roger Hode, a 43-year-old man from South River, pleaded guilty in an agreement with Deputy First Assistant Prosecutor Christopher L.C. Kuberiet.
